Why You Might Need a Sleep Study: Sleep Apnea and COPD

Sleep-related breathing problems can be especially important to evaluate when someone also has chronic respiratory disease. A sleep study gives the care team objective information about breathing and oxygen patterns during sleep.

Why nighttime data matters

Symptoms such as loud snoring, witnessed pauses, gasping, morning headaches or severe daytime sleepiness may prompt a conversation about sleep-disordered breathing. Existing respiratory conditions can make that conversation more clinically important.

What a sleep study measures

Depending on the test, monitoring can include breathing patterns, oxygen levels, heart rate, movement and other signals. In-lab polysomnography provides a broader set of measurements than most home testing.

Bring the whole health picture

People with complex medical histories should discuss those conditions with the ordering clinician so the most appropriate type of testing can be selected.

Ready to ask the next question?

If sleep symptoms are persistent or affecting daily life, an evaluation can help determine whether sleep testing or another next step is appropriate.
